frequently asked questions

I hope here you can find answers to the most common questions I am asked about the Dog Citizen training method, services and what to expect.
Do you have a training facility?
No, because my ethos is to train you both in your real world environment. If appropriate though during a training programme, we may travel locally and meet in another public area too.
I am not sure if my dog needs manners training or behaviour modification?
It could be both! Don’t worry, I will make this clear in my assessment post-visit, and price accordingly and fairly.
How do I book or learn more about dog training?
Simply get in touch: call, complete the contact form below, text or WhatsApp me. We can have a chat and take it from there!
What areas do you serve?
As I have recently relocated here my catchment area will be growing. I am based in SY13 serving Whitchurch, Whixall and Wem, and broadening out from there. A small surcharge may apply for >10 miles from Whitchurch. Get in touch and ask me!
Do you offer group classes or workshops?
No I do not, I specialise in bespoke, one-to-one training.
Is your one-to-one training just with one other person as well as my dog?
Normally yes, but it depends on your set-up. One person is best, two is okay, but anything more and the distraction level for your dog is too high. With family set-ups I can also work with your supervision with your children later in a programme.
How do I pay for your dog training?
Payment is normally requested by bank transfer, though I can accept cash or cards too. Payment is requested in full for the agreed programme after our first session to make sure you are happy. For longer programmes, instalments can be considered.
Is your assessment visit free, and how long does it last?
Yes it is, and you are under no obligation to take up any training. A visit normally lasts 45 minutes to an hour. If you just are outside my catchment area or interested in an on-line consultation, the same applies for a virtual visit, and which is normally 30 minutes in duration.
What can I expect after your visit?
I will come back to you with a brief written assessment and suggested training programme, recommending a certain number of sessions. You do not have to take up any training, or you can go with the recommendation, or instead take up my minimum two sessions.
How long are typical training programmes?
They are all bespoke so it depends what it is right for you. Typically my programmes are for 2-5 sessions. If desired these can be extended individually or in further blocks. Manners or puppy training are sometimes shorter in total duration than more complex behaviour challenges.
How frequent are the training sessions?
Weekly is recommended to get a rhythm to the training, though for longer programmes sometimes a break is beneficial and of course life gets in the way too!
Is there a time limit to a training programme?
For your dog to benefit from training it is important that gaps in-between sessions are not too long. So I do ask that bookings are diarised in a timely manner. I will provide an outline for this with your training programme.
What is included with the training?
My travel to you *, a generous hour with me, detailed feedback following each session, and on-going advice during and after the programme.
* Non-local surcharge may apply.
Can I add on ad hoc lessons?
Absolutely! Or as an on-line consultation too.

Do you offer gundog training?
No I do not offer specific gundog training, though as a gundog enthusiast and owner, my training often dovetails with this and anyway provides a solid foundation for more specialist training elsewhere.
Do you offer trick training or ringcraft?
No, there are plenty of other specialists for these elsewhere!
What does ‘force-free’ training mean?
This is a general term that means your dog is trained in a way that avoids confrontation, punishment, domination or stress. It is a modern, kind, ethical and proven way to train a dog that builds trust. It centres on the idea of your dog being a companion, and you a guide, not a leader. This extends to use of equipment too, avoiding anything considered aversive.
What does ‘aversive’ mean?
Anything that tries to force a dog into a physical position or state of mind. ‘Aversive’ can refer to equipment such as tightening collars or harnesses, or e-collars, or verbal or physical intimidation. The Dog Citizen method is passionately opposed to this, sometimes also called ‘balanced’ training. I will help you redirect your training away from these if you have tried them before.
What can I expect with an online consultation?
A virtual session with me for an hour that addresses the subject or any priorities we will have agreed on. This can be on most platforms, commonly WhatsApp video, Teams or Zoom. You will also receive written feedback following the session with suggested steps to follow and further guidance.
Are there any breeds you specialise in?
No I work with any breed or type!
When should I book training for my new puppy?
Although toilet training starts at home immediately, the first week or so should just be allowed for your new puppy to settle into their new surroundings and bond with you. Then we are good to go!
What are your hours?
Standard hours are 9am to 6pm, Monday to Friday, but Saturday mornings or other exceptions can be considered. Seasonal variation (daylight as well as temperatures) can vary the hours either way. I’m flexible! Sessions are booked at times convenient and workable for you.
Can I gift dog training to someone else?
Absolutely! Please see my Gift Vouchers page here
Do you have Terms & Conditions?
Yes, provided anytime on request or provided as standard if you request an assessment visit or take up my training.
